Its that time of year again… cows have started showing up in the city by the truck load. These pictures are taken a few doors down from my apartment. While driving past the other day, my driver Joshim remarked “showoff”! This guy built a cow shed out on the road out side his house so that cars have to drive around it. Inside he put lights and fans in for his FOUR cows, and a full time attendant! It’s also custom that when you buy a cow, they deliver it to your house the day before Eid so you don’t have to get stuck taking care of a cow for several days, its very expensive, smelly, and takes up a ton of space in our already too cramped city. But as Joshim explained, this guy ordered 4 very expensive Indian cows, and wanted everyone in the neighborhood to see. These big cows are imported, cost over $2,000 USD a cow, and provides enough meat for over 20 people. So this guy has $8,000 worth of cows outside his house, just hanging out. (Keeping in mind the average salary for a Bangladeshi is less than $2,000 USD for a whole year!!) I’ve always said, the people who have money in this country have crazy money!
Anyway, again this year I’ll be getting out of the country to avoid the slaughter. I’m headed to Vietnam for the week, and will follow up with pictures later!
